Two posts in one - Announcing Blog Action Day

Sabie River Dawn

I have, I realise, gone completely bush mad. There’s a nice, but very rude expression for it in Afrikaans, but aware of bloggy sensibilities, I won’t use it here – it’s translatable enough for anyone to understand!

However, I’m that bushmad that I’m trying to get back to the bush. And what I’m wondering is, why has it taken me so long, and literally on the eve of our leaving SA for the Wet and Soggy Place, for me to discover the bush. Perhaps it’s because South Africans just take the bush for granted. We know it’s there, so you know, no big deal. But it is a big deal. It’s an awesome deal – that sheer magic of being out in wild nature is just irreplaceable. I would wish for every single one of you to experience it. And by experiencing it, I mean going out and actually walking in the bush - the real bush, where the lions and elephants and impala live.

As for getting back into the bush, I considered an African swansong – Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean/Zambian border (staying in Zambia) and Chobe Game Reserve in Botswana. But the thing that really grabbed me by the throat (and totally out-budgeted me) was the cost. Hideously expensive. I’m utterly staggered at the price of safari holidays, at how much private lodges and hotel chains charge for accommodation per night – never mind the airfares and airport taxes, park fees, activity charges etc. There are some people who are making a lot of money out of all this.

And here’s the rub. While hotel chains and private lodges are creaming it, the people who work for them and the people who live in the immediate environment remain horribly poor – often living below, on or just above the poverty line. It’s no small wonder that service in Africa is berated as being awful. How, after all, would you like to work for some fatcat serving “wealthy” tourists, when you don’t even earn enough to put food on the table. At the Victoria Falls curio markets, stallholders will barter goods – clothing, children’s clothing in particular, shoes and pens are all gratefully accepted as currency – because they are so unaffordable and so unavailable.

Township realities and tin shanties (near Johannesburg)

And this brings me to the next element of this post. Blog Action Day. It’s on the 15th of October this year and the topic is Poverty. I think I’m pretty well placed to write about poverty given it’s all around me. I’m hoping to rope D in to co-write with me, as an ex academic (socio-political theory) and well-published in his own right, he will bring extra depth to anything I might have to say.

Do go and check out the Blog Action site and sign up to participate. If you feel you’d have nothing to say, and I find that hard to believe! the site gives a host of ideas and suggestions for post topics on the day.

It's a really good event, Lane, generated a lot of publicity last year on environmental and green issues.

Hope you're having a happy birthday, Rambler :-)

Thanks for the box-by ... I understand about the bush thing... altho the word 'bush' is not one used affectionally anymore.

And about poverty - solve that and the world becomes nearly paradise.

Good on ya, Baino! And yep, beauty and the beast, you've got in one.

Hope to see you blogging on Blog Action Day, Marie :-)

I hope we find a good bush package do, Sameera - I think I've got bush fever! ;-)

I know, I know, VV, don't tell me, all my UK mates have been lamenting all summer!

I have a solution, Bill, but I doubt the other guys will by into it! ;-)

I am in for Blog Action Day.
I am very glad to do my part, thanks for the tip!

So... I blackboxed my way here today, you should have seen the instant grin and delight on my face when your blog popped up. YAY!

I have to ask. Are you going to start a Little Black Box support group now? Since it's dangerously close to necessary?

;o)

Have a safe trip to Soggsville.

Absolute Vanilla (and Atyllah) said...

It's weird, Scarlett but I haven't yet blackboxed my way to anyone I usually blog with - yet...

Someone, on another blog was discussing the need for a support group, possibly even government funding. I said so long as there was someone to bring me a steady supply of chocolate while I blackboxed, no other support would be necessary! Mind you, the chocolate could run into the need for government funding...
;-)

Fabulous post. It's something we rarely think about when we're sat tucking into a steak and a glass of red.

thanks for letting us know about this IMPORTANT day and getting a head start on the conversation with this great post!

I registered and am ready! (saying this is funny as on monday I was registering voters here in the u.s. -- after folks registered I gave out buttons that that said - I'm registered and ready!)strange synchronicity.

Mother of Invention said...

Okay, I found it but I swear the word decide was not there when I first looked at it! It was a totally black box!
Very cool! (I don't know how to put anything in my sidebar so that's why it's so plain and simp!)

You think the pricing for the Safari is expensive? You wait till you arrive in the UK. Not all flights go for a pound, lol.

Suzan Abrams said...

Are you coming to stay in the UK then, Atyllah?

Yes, it's been raining all through the summer and Dublin's worse, always the wetter and colder city but then Belfast is even colder and wetter than both London & Dublin. I do go to London pretty often.

It's the autumn now; pretty bleak and cold despite the promised dry days and odd bits of sunshine. In the end, we never had the summer...not Dublin anyway.

You're right about the safaris. In East Africa alone, they've increased by a few hundred US dollars per person. The cost of fuel is the main reason offered. I got good deals. Apparently, the way to get a properly-valued deal is through recommendations or through personal contacts in the safari tour companies. I already had a few friends. The best way is to keep in touch with your first safari organisers. You'll find that later on they'll remember you and offer you far cheaper deals than a stranger would expect to get.

regards

Came to you through Black Box and like what I read. Know Crystal Jigsaw from PurpleCoo - small world! I used to work for a tour operator specialising in 'Black Tie' safaris (Abercrombie & Kent)so know all about the exhorbitant cost thing, Chobe Game Reserve et al. It's pretty damn shocking and gets you thinking. Was always uncomfortable with it. Will check out Blog Action. Thanks for pointing us that way.

Thanks for the info! And thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving the nice comment.

Fabulous post, AV. I need a good cause, so I'm in! Hmmm...me thinks that me needs to take shots of homeless people and take down their stories. Capital idea. :)

I went to Chobe and Vic Falls whilst a student but only because we were doing a trip on a budget - we travelled in lorries through Botswana and stayed in schools. The bits in Vic Falls (or as I like to call it the world's biggest wet t-shirt competition)and Chobe cost as much as the whole of the rest of the trip (I was there for the best part of 3 months) ... but the bit that broke my heart was the poverty of the African students we were travelling with. Off to register.

Absolute Vanilla (and Atyllah) said...

Oh my, look at that, I go to bed and there are a gazillion comments when I wake up! What fun! ;-)

Good going, RLB!

Hmm, now there's a surprise, Sameera! :-)

Thanks, CJ!

Oh yes, I do like that synchronicity, Kim!

What blogger format are you using MOI - if it's new blogger, getting stuff in the sidebar is easy. Just log in, go to your dashboard, select "layout" click add gadget and select whatever "thing" you want to add. If you want to add the black box, select add html and add the code provided using Stray's instructions on the link I've provided to her post. Click save and there you go. You can move the object around to where you want it to be positioned in the side bar by dragging and dropping.
Hope that helps! :-)

Don't worry, I'm well aware of UK prices, Trixie, I lived there for several years :-)

Yes, that's the plan, Suzan. And yep, I'm well aware of foul UK and Irish weather having lived in both places before! :-) I can get good deals on safaris, far better than most foreigners, but it's still extortionately expensive when you compare the prices to holidays in the East, for example. And it has little to do with fuel prices.

Ah yes, Her on the Hill, Abercrombie & Kent, I remember them... not the cheapest option, eh? :-) And yes, the prices do get one thinking...

Hi Country Girl, thanks for the return visit :-)

Oh I like that idea, JD, very much! I've always wanted to do something like that but have never felt quite right about it. Go for it!

Thanks for dropping by Real Tech Mom! Isn't black box just totally cool! ;-)

Will do, SCC!

It all begs some serious questions, doesn't it, Laquet.
